DAYTONA BEACH, FL (Feb. 15, 2010) - Led by the performance of freshman, Mitsuki Katahira (Tokyo, Japan), the Daytona State College Women’s Golf Team won the Tusculum College/Kiawah Island Invitational by six strokes over 2nd place team Rollins College. After carding 75 in the opening round, Katahira shot a 2-under 70 to tie for first place individually.
This is the third win for the Lady Falcons this year. Daytona State (602 +26) finished six strokes better than 2nd place Rollins College (608 +32) and seven strokes better than 3rd place Florida Southern (609 +33).
Other top finishers for Daytona State were Ashley Mooney (Port St. Lucie, FL) who finished 3rd with scores of 74-74, Ericka Schneider (Bradenton, FL) who finished in 7th place with scores of 78-74, Amy West (Valrico, FL) who finished 15th with scores of 79-78 and Barbara Malone (West Palm Beach, FL) who finished 29th with scores of 79-84.
“The entire team was very impressive this past weekend, as they had to deal with frigid temperatures along with wind and rain on Saturday,” stated Coach Laura Brown. “They all fought hard and were well deserving of the win. Their hard work continues to pay off and they are all very excited about our upcoming events.”
The Lady Falcons will be back in action at the Jacksonville University Women’s Golf Invitational February 22 and 23 at Hidden Hills Country Club.
Daytona State College is a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association and the Florida Community College Athletics Association Mid-Florida Conference. The Falcons currently compete in seven Division I NJCAA sports including Men's and Women's Basketball, Baseball, Fast-Pitch Softball, Women's Golf and Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving. The main focus of the Daytona State Falcons athletic program is to prepare student-athletes for success in life.
